In the recent decades the worldwide Adobe Corporation and its products (Acrobat, Photoshop, Postscript, Indesign) are the forerunners of the digital revolution in the printed and multimedia communication. The mentioned products have turned into de facto standards in their respective application areas. The world-popular Microsoft (MS) Word software has become the text-processing standard.
MS Word possesses functions for co-operative (distant) work, which are however less well known than MS WOrd itslef.
MS Word supports:
- visual diferentiation between the original and edited texts;
- individualisation of all edits by the name of the editor and time of editing;
- delete/insert/highlight text;
- adding and attaching comments/questions to specific parts of the text;
- merging all edits into a common file;
- selective accept/reject of suggested edits.

The most popular way of sending files over the Internet is by e-mail. Unfortunately this method in not universal, since often there are limitations on the size of files sent, or received, or on both, which makes impossible sending and/or receiving large files. Often these are the exact files carrying photos or illustrations (especially so with large dimensions, like those needed for posters, and high resolutions, required for printing, as contrasted to the lower resolution sufficient for viewing on screen). Paper formats refer to the standard size of the paper sheet. Currently there are two systems which dominate in the world: the international standard discussed below (applied in most of Europe) and the North American standard (used in the English speaking world).
The international standard for paper standards ISO 216 is based on the metric system and is employed by all countries, except the USA and Canada.
